Upstate New York Gets Another Cool, Contemporary Hotel

A new boutique hotel is about to hit the scene in rapidly-evolving Hudson, New York—yes, just two doors down from the popular all-organic diner, Grazin. Rivertown Lodge is housed in an old movie house—with the original white marquee sign still hanging low over Warren Street.

What’s it like inside? Let’s start with the open-plan lobby, which makes a dazzling first impression with white oak floors, spare decor, and glass panel dividers. In true upstate style, a pair of potbelly stoves (a necessity once winter hits) anchor the two cozy seating areas, and beyond that, there’s a fully equipped kitchen with two large windows, an induction stovetop, and gleaming espresso machine.

Next to the check-in counter—equipped with its own record player—a small gallery sells thoughtfully curated souvenirs ranging from storm matches to leather pencil cases to the latest issue of Gather. All of which are sure to be a hit with the hotel’s younger, design-minded audience.

The simple rooms sustain that clean, vintage-modern aesthetic, with the same oak floors and bright palette. Corner Cabins are the cheapest and most basic option, with cubby-style beds built into the wall; though small, gleaming glass-enclosed showers with brass fixtures and mosaic tile floors make up for the size.

Room 28, the hotel’s only suite, features an elegant wire-frame 4-poster bed and an antique drop-front writing desk. It’s also the only bathroom with a standalone tub.

The independently-owned, 30-room hotel received its first guests September 15, and is currently in soft opening phase. A restaurant and bar are scheduled to open third week of October.

Rates for a double room start at $199.
